This isn’t exactly an apologia for not writing more book reviews, but you could take it that way if you like.
One reason I haven’t written as many reviews this year is my stated aim to read fewer books. But another reason is that I am reading a bunch of books that I’m just not interested in writing thoughtful, meaningful reviews of. Some of these because they pertain to parts of my life I’m not interested in sharing with the whole internet at the moment.
But others because they are the most boring books I have subjected myself to. I refer, of course, to books about business. I am probably simultaneously reading six books currently on business, and they are incredibly banal.
Why, I hear you ask, are you reading books on business. Well, I have the unfortunate curse of being a person who operates a business. Of all people without an entrepreneurial bone in their body, around five years ago I went from someone who did tutoring on the side, to a person who operates a small business; a solopreneur, as some like to say.
I sometimes wonder if this is part of God’s ironic side. I have always considered the world of business to be incredibly dull and dreary. I have been allergic to marketing, management, accounting, and everything to do with the money-making industry. And yet here I am five-years into a home-run business where I tailor-make bespoke classes in ancient language acquisition, and it seems like I am probably fated to keep doing this for an untold length of time, so I better get a little better at the business side of it.
Hence the books. Seumas, have you learnt anything useful about business from these books? Unsure, check back with me in another year.
